Employment is a fundamental value and ambition in American culture, and people with disabilities want to be a part of their communities just as everyone does. Approximately 20 percent of U.S. citizens have one or more diagnosed psychological, intellectual or physical disabilities.
HHS is committed to ensuring people with disabilities have access to meaningful employment services in the community, especially integrated competitive employment.
This Employment First principle guides HHS services for people with disabilities and helps put them on a path towards self-sufficiency through full participation in community life.
HHS has developed a brochure for people with a disability who want to learn about competitive, integrated employment in the community. The brochure contains information on Employment First, the employment services offered through Health and Human Services programs and how going to work may affect Social Security benefits and health care coverage.
