Texas Works Path to Success Pilot Program

Texas Works Path to Success (TWPS) is a pilot program offered in the Houston area to equip adults and high school seniors at selected schools to join the workforce and achieve economic stability. The program is a partnership between Texas Health and Human Services, Houston Independent School District, Texans Can Academies, Goodwill Houston and the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Food and Nutrition Service. TWPS aims to increase economic self-reliance, housing stability, educational advancement and quality of life by providing participants with training to learn valuable and practical job skills.

TWPS Career Pathways

  • HHS Texas Works Advisor I: Provides help to Texans in need of financial, food and medical assistance. Does research and interviews applicants to get financial and personal information to determine eligibility for programs.
  • HHS Texas Works Clerk: Provides essential clerical services to keep the office operating in an efficient manner. Works face to face with customers and helps answer questions related to benefits.

Eligibility Requirements

To participate in either the student or adult TWPS program you:

  • Must reside in Harris or surrounding counties and
  • may need to meet additional qualifications when applying depending on your program.

I am an adult (18 years or older). What opportunities are available to me through TWPS?

Participants who successfully complete the HHS Clerical or Texas Works Advisor I pathways and have a high school diploma (or equivalent) will be hired in a Houston-area eligibility office. These staff help connect Texans to services like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Medicaid.

Participants will have access to:

  • Job readiness training from Goodwill Houston including: interviewing, problem-solving, time management, work etiquette, interpersonal skills and basic job retention skills.
  • Case management and wraparound services that assist participants with overcoming barriers that would prevent them from participating, such as child care needs or transportation assistance.
  • Work-based learning opportunities in each of the career pathways offered.

I am a student in school. What opportunities will be available to me through TWPS?

Students who complete the HHS Texas Works Advisor I pathway that will be offered during their senior year, will be hired in a Houston-area eligibility office upon successful completion of TWPS training and graduation from high school. These staff members help connect Texans to services like SNAP, TANF and Medicaid. Participating schools in the Houston area are Sterling High School, Worthing High School, Wheatley High School and Houston Can Academy Southwest.

Participants will have access to:

  • Job readiness training from Goodwill Houston including: interviewing, problem-solving, time management, work etiquette, interpersonal skills and basic job retention skills.
