After you're approved for Medicaid or CHIP, you must pick a health plan. You will have at least two plans to choose from. Your health plan choices depend on where you live (PDF) and the program you're enrolled in.

Pregnant women might be able to get free health coverage during their pregnancy through Medicaid for Pregnant Women or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Perinatal program. Medicaid provides health coverage to low-income pregnant women during pregnancy and up to 12 months after the postpartum.

Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program can provide health care for low-income children and families and long-term services and supports for people with disabilities and seniors.

CHIP perinatal coverage provides care to unborn children of pregnant women who are not eligible for Medicaid and who have a household income up to 202% of the federal poverty income level (FPIL).

STAR Kids is a Texas Medicaid managed care program that provides Medicaid benefits to children and adults 20 and younger who have disabilities.

STAR covers low-income children, pregnant women and families. STAR members get their services through health plans they choose.

HHSC provides services to Texas women such as aiding in preventing unintended pregnancies, nurturing healthier pregnancies, addressing domestic violence and taking care of children.

Texas WIC offers a wide array of resources to support breastfeeding mothers.

Gov. Abbott announced that HHSC is extending postpartum coverage to 12 months for eligible Medicaid and CHIP recipients effective March 1, 2024.
