Residential treatment services for substance use disorders are provided in licensed facilities where people stay for a short period of time. Treatment includes counseling, case management, education, and recovery skills training.
There are two types of substance use residential treatment services:
- Supportive residential treatment
- Provides at least six hours of treatment services per week at a licensed treatment center. Persons in this level of treatment often seek employment or job training while staying in a safe and supportive place.
- Intensive residential treatment
- Provides at least 30 hours of treatment services per week at a licensed treatment center. Persons in this level of treatment develop the skills to start and continue their recovery process.

Living at the treatment center allows you to begin the recovery process in a safe and supportive place. The treatment process helps a person identify the causes and effects of substance use, develop healthy ways to cope with life's problems, and learn ways to decrease the risk of returning to use.
Who is Eligible for Substance Use Residential Treatment Services?
- Texas residents 18 years of age and older;
- Persons diagnosed with a substance use disorder; and
- Eligibility for state financial support is based on income, expenses, and other resources. In some cases, a person may be required to pay a portion of the services cost.
