The Transportation for Indigent Cancer Patients program provides transportation services to indigent cancer patients from their residence to a regional or distant cancer referral institution, including cancer facilities in the program area.
The Transportation for Indigent Cancer Patients program only operates in Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Nueces, Starr, Webb, Willacy and Zapata counties.
You might be able to receive services through the program if you are:
- Living in one of the counties listed above.
- An indigent cancer patient.
- Not eligible for Medicaid or the Children with Special Health Care Needs program.
- In need of transportation services to your cancer treatments.
What does it mean to be indigent?
Indigent patients are people who don’t have health insurance but are not eligible for Medicaid or the Children with Special Health Care Needs program.
To receive services through the Transportation for Indigent Cancer Patients program, you must be medically indigent or meet federal poverty guidelines (PDF).
How do I receive services?
You must reside in one of the following counties to receive services: Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Nueces, Starr, Webb, Willacy or Zapata.
To receive an application, call 877-633-8747 (877-MED-TRIP).
Include the following information in your application:
- Confirmation of a cancer or cancer-related diagnosis that is documented by a licensed medical physician.
- Confirmation you have been accepted for evaluation or treatment by an intercounty or interregional referral institution capable of providing quality cancer services.
- Identification, such as a driver license or passport.
- Proof of residence in an eligible county, such as a utility bill under your name.
- If you are living with a family member, they should submit the proof of residence and a written letter verifying you live with them.
- Proof of income
