This webpage provides planning and response information, resources and strategies that can assist the area agencies on aging network to better prepare for and respond to all types of emergencies, disasters, epidemics and pandemics.

The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) [PDF] expands, extends and enhances outreach efforts to beneficiaries on Medicare Part D and for those with limited income. The State Health Insurance Program (SHIP), the Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) and the Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRC) are coordinating efforts to provide outreach to Texas beneficiaries with limited incomes statewide, and for general Part D outreach and assistance to beneficiaries in rural areas.

Texas Health and Human Services contracts with licensed agencies to provide personal assistance services to people who have physical disabilities who are mentally and emotionally competent and willing to supervise their attendant or have someone who can supervise the attendant for them. The individual interviews, selects, trains, supervises and releases their personal assistants. Health-related tasks are prescribed by physician.

The 28 area agencies on aging (AAA) provide services to help people age 60 and older, their family members and caregivers receive the information and assistance they need in locating and accessing community services.

The Minimum Data Set (MDS) is a standardized collection of demographic and clinical information that describes a person's overall condition. All licensed nursing facilities in Texas are required to submit MDS assessments for all residents admitted into their facility. The current version is MDS 3.0.

The Texas Medicaid & Healthcare Partnership has identified an issue affecting Resource Utilization Group score calculations for long-term care nursing facilities.

Texas nursing facilities (NFs) must not transmit Minimum Data Set (MDS) Optional State Assessments (OSAs) to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Internet Quality Improvement and Evaluation System (iQIES).

On Oct. 1, 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Resident Assessment Validation and Entry System will no longer be supported by CMS.
