Job Description:

Under the supervision of the clinic supervisor, the WIC Certifying Specialist collects and records anthropometric, biochemical, and health history data for WIC Program applicants and provides nutrition guidance to low-risk WIC participants, following program policies. They assess health history questionnaires, provide nutrition counseling, and use Power of Influence (P.O.I.) principles to enhance service delivery. Their role includes issuing referrals, approving formula issuance, and teaching nutrition and breastfeeding classes as needed. Additionally, they provide breastfeeding support, assist with common breastfeeding challenges, issue breastfeeding equipment, and make referrals for specialized care when necessary. The specialist also completes various clerical tasks, participates in training, and undertakes additional duties as assigned by their supervisor.

Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Director, the certifying authority is responsible for certifying nutritional risk conditions at the time of certification and prescribing supplemental foods.

Education/Licensure:

Bachelor's or Master’s degree from an accredited college with at least 12 hours of food and nutrition and at least 6 hours of science.

Essential Functions:

According to WIC policy, performs and documents Certifying Authority (CA) duties, including nutritional risk evaluation and individual counseling. Teaches nutritional education classes or helps with technician duties. Prepares bulletin boards and other NE materials. Complete and attend all required training. Be completely cross-trained to do all computer activities as well as all clerical duties.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the WIC program. Service-oriented. Keyboarding and organizational skills. Writing and oral skills to allow effective communication. Skill in exercising discretion, confidentiality, and use of sound independent judgment. Ability to change and learn new skills. Good health and physical condition sufficient to permit full performance of the position. Bilingual in Spanish, preferred.
