HHSC LTCR is reminding nursing facility providers that CMS issued new guidance for nursing facilities (NF) on the use of enhanced barrier precautions (EBP). NF providers should review CMS Memo QSO-24-08-NH (PDF) for guidance related to EBPs and infection control.
CMS requirements for EBP are indicated for residents with:
- Infection or colonization with a CDC-targeted MDRO when contact precautions do not otherwise apply.
- Wounds or indwelling medical devices, even if the resident is not known to be infected or colonized with a MDRO.
CDC provides a summary of PPE use and room restrictions when caring for residents colonized or infected with MDROs in nursing homes.
Per federal requirements, a NF must establish an infection prevention and control program (IPCP) with a system for preventing, identifying, reporting, investigating, and controlling infections and communicable diseases. An IPCP must include the use of EBP in conjunction with standard precautions or the use of transmission-based precautions as applicable.
