Coordinated Specialty Care for First Episode of Psychosis

Coordinated Specialty Care for First Episode Psychosis (CSC-FEP) program provides outpatient mental health treatment to persons experiencing an early onset of psychosis. Services are provided to empower the person’s ability to lead a self-directed life within the community. In Texas, CSC-FEP programs use a holistic approach. The multidisciplinary team includes a psychiatrist, licensed therapist, family partner, peer partner, case manager, and supportive employment and education specialist.

CSC-FEP program includes the following services:

  • Psychotherapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis;
  • Family education, support, and involvement;
  • Support from peers in recovery from mental illness;
  • Psychotropic medications prescribed by a psychiatrist;
  • Support for education and employment goals.

CSC-FEP services are for people ages 15–30 who have a psychotic disorder diagnosed within the past two years. Qualified applicants may have private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, or no health insurance at all. People seeking CSC-FEP services can visit Mental Health TX to locate their local mental health authority or local behavioral health authority and to determine if there is a CSC-FEP provider in their area.

Level of Care: Early Onset (LOC- EO)

People enrolled in CSC receive mental health services through an LOC created specifically for early-onset psychosis. Adults receive an LOC-Adult Early Onset (LOC-AEO) and children receive an LOC-Children Early Onset (LOC-CEO). Enrolled persons must deviate into LOC-EO based on their age. The CSC model is team-based and provides comprehensive treatment and support services to keep people on the path to recovery. These services follow HHSC’s Texas Resilience and Recovery Utilization Management guidelines: Adult Mental Health (PDF)
