Having aging-related conversations with older loved ones about their concerns, plans and dreams for the future can help them make informed decisions.
These conversations, and the decisions that come with them, can sometimes be difficult. To help caregivers be proactive, HHSC Aging Services Coordination developed the Texas Talks campaign.
This year’s Texas Talks theme is “Supporting the Health of Your Loved One’s Body and Mind as They Age.” This is broken down into four topics:
- Mental health. As we age, we may have a routine of seeing our doctors and taking our medications, but we may not have a routine for our mental health. Finding ways to support your loved one’s mental health now can help in the future.
- Nutrition. Staying hydrated and eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, healthy grains, and lean proteins are important parts of healthy aging. Learn how to help your loved ones access healthy food in their community.
- Physical health. We’ve all heard about the benefits of exercise, but we may not have thought about how to stay active as we get older. Learn how your loved ones can start healthy habits now and plan to sustain those habits as they age.
- Social health. Relationships with friends and the community can support social wellness. Helping your loved one strengthen their social connections can prevent loneliness.
