AMARILLO – The Texas Health and Human Services Commission invites the public to attend an information session on Thursday, June 13, to learn more about construction plans for the new $159 million state hospital in Amarillo.
The community information session will offer an overview of state hospital system improvements and provide the public an opportunity to ask questions about the facility.
Construction on the 75-bed Panhandle State Hospital is set to begin in late 2024, with completion estimated for summer 2027.
Since 2017, Gov. Greg Abbott and the state Legislature have invested more than $2.5 billion to replace, renovate or build state hospitals across Texas.
“Thanks to a significant investment by Gov. Abbott and the 88th Texas Legislature, we are close to breaking ground on the new Panhandle State Hospital,” said Scott Schalchlin, deputy executive commissioner of the HHSC Health and Specialty Care System. “We want community members, leaders and neighbors to learn how this new hospital will benefit their community with modernized, high-quality inpatient psychiatric care.”
The Panhandle State Hospital will feature state-of-the-art therapeutic spaces in a secure environment. The hospital’s outdoor spaces, individual patient rooms and extensive use of natural light are designed to promote healing and recovery.
HHSC owns and operates nine state hospitals and one residential treatment center for youth. State hospitals provide inpatient psychiatric services to individuals on civil commitments as well as competency restoration services for individuals on forensic commitments who have been determined incompetent to stand trial or found not guilty by reason of insanity.
