This November, give thanks to the family caregivers in your life. National Family Caregivers Month aims to recognize and honor the millions of people across the nation who care for a loved one.
HHSC recognizes the importance of informal caregivers — family members and friends who help with daily activities like cooking or getting dressed — and emphasizes how vital it is that they be mindful of their own needs as well.
In March, HHSC launched the Strengthen the Care You Give caregiving campaign to help Texans learn about the role of the family caregiver, highlight issues associated with caregiving, and build awareness of available services and supports.
Through the campaign, HHSC encourages caregivers to seek support when needed. For more information, visit the Strengthen The Care You Give webpage about helpful caregiving resources, including:
- Self-care to help caregivers maintain their mental health by taking a scheduled break, finding peer support or connecting with mental and behavioral support services.
- Training and planning resources to help caregivers strengthen the care they provide through specific care-related skill development and planning resources.
- Support and resources that caregivers may need, including a range of supportive services and resources for specific populations.
“Family caregivers provide so much for their loved ones,” said Holly Riley, director of the HHSC Aging Services Coordination Office. “It’s critically important that they also take the time to care for themselves too. Setting aside time for exercise, restful sleep — time to do things that are important to them — can make a positive impact in everyone’s life.”
The Aging Services Coordination office is hosting a caregiver webinar series in November for caregivers, people who work with caregivers and anyone interested in caregiving.
