Residents of the Corpus Christi State Supported Living Center received a special delivery this year on Valentine’s Day.
Businesses, organizations and people from across the country sent Valentine’s Day cards to the center to give to residents.
Kelsey Mitchell, Corpus Christi SSLC’s community relations assistant director, said the SSLC’s Volunteer Services Council wanted to strengthen the connection between the SSLC and the community at large. So, last month, council members posted on the center’s website and Facebook page asking for Valentine’s Day cards for its 186 residents.
“Our main goal was to pass out at least one valentine to each of our residents,” Mitchell said. “We were expecting a few volunteers but were pleasantly surprised by the responses from our posts.”
Donors included local businesses, schools, clubs and people from the Coastal Bend area. The SSLC even received cards from other states, with the farthest-traveled card coming from Georgia, Mitchell said.
The SSLC received more than 1,300 cards. With the generous donations, each resident received multiple cards.
“We are so thankful for the love everyone put into the cards and happy to have such a great turnout,” said Lori Garcia, Corpus Christi SSLC’s community relations director.
