Valerie Mayes serves as the deputy state Medicaid director for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. In this role, she works closely with the Chief of Medicaid and CHIP Services to drive strategic initiatives, represent Medicaid and CHIP Services with stakeholders, continue to build the division’s workforce and culture, and address urgent cross-divisional issues.
Mayes joined HHSC in 2008 as a Medicaid and CHIP policy analyst and held various leadership roles within HHSC, including director positions in Medicaid and CHIP program and eligibility policy, cross-division coordination and a nonprofit social service program. She most recently served as deputy executive commissioner of Policy and Quality for Medicaid and CHIP Services.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Mount St. Mary’s University and a Master of Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University.
